Asthma Guidelines

The updated National Asthma Guideline is now available. The new guideline shifts the focus from severity to level of control and impairment. It contains updated recommendations for managing asthma long term and for managing exacerbations using four essential components of asthma care: assessment and monitoring, patient education, control of factors contributing to asthma severity, and drug treatment.

The updated guideline from the NAEPP Expert Panel Report-Update 2007 made the following recommendations to practitioners:

Medications

• Use long-term control medications daily to achieve and maintain control
• Use Quick relief medications to treat acute symptoms and exacerbations
• Provide education on inhaled medications and technique at each clinical visit

Monitoring

• Instruct patients to recognize inadequate asthma control
• Assess asthma control, medication administration, written action plan, and patient concerns at each clinical visit
