The Diagnosis and Management of Dyslipidemia

Unity is pleased to provide the dyslipidemia guideline to help you care for your patients. Within the guidelines are a number of key items: the Framingham risk model, drug specific treatment recommedations, a profile of the major drug classes and a dose equivalence chart for the various statin medications. Patient education handouts on Benecol, Niaspan, and Fish Oil are included with the guideline.

These guidelines emphasize:

• More aggressive treatment of high cholesterol
• Better identification of patients at high risk of a heart attack
• Use of a lipoprotein profile/fasting lipid panel to test for high cholesterol
• Changes in what is considered low HDL
• New therapeutic lifestyle changes
• More attention to metabolic syndrome
• More attention to the treatment of high triglycerides
