The hypertension guidelines are based on the Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC VII) which encourages practitioners to set a clear goal of therapy based on a patient's risk. Also, for patients above goal at the start of therapy, additional recommendations have been given, including a new classification entitled "pre-hypertension."
